Nishikawa Style Japanese Dance Experience 「Now accepting reservations」

Founding of the Nishikawa School

The Nagoya-based Nishikawa School was founded by Nishikawa Koisaburo I in 1841. Koisaburo boldly incorporated the strengths of Noh and Kyogen into his own dance, creating a unique style that sets him apart from traditional Kabuki dance. This style is still alive in Nagoya today as the Nishikawa School of Japanese Dance.

The greatest feature of Japanese dance

The key is that the performer can "become anything." The "Wisteria Girl" that I will be showing is originally a female dance performed by a famous Kabuki actor. A male like me dances as a lovely young woman who is the spirit of the wisteria flower. Conversely, female dancers can also play brave warriors or stylish Edoites. What's important is not the gender of appearance, but being able to fully become the "heart" of the character. One of the great attractions of Japanese dance is that it allows us to fulfill this desire for transformation.

Transformation of Japanese Dance

We can even become something other than human: for example, in "Daughter Dojoji," a woman consumed by jealousy who eventually transforms into a terrifying snake, or a legendary lion, a charming bird, or even a willow branch swaying in the wind or the gently flowing water of a river.
Rather than explaining everything realistically, scenes and emotions are expressed symbolically through sophisticated "forms" such as the movement of a single fan, a slight angle of the face, or the direction of the gaze. This is what stimulates the viewer's imagination, allowing them to see cherry blossoms in full bloom and raging waves that are not actually on stage.

The rules of Japanese dance

Rather than being bound by restrictive rules, it is a magical device that gives us the freedom to transform into anything. We are immersed in the world of the story, effortlessly transcending gender, age, and sometimes even being human. This fantasy-like experience is the true joy of Japanese dance. I sincerely hope that people all over the world will experience the fascinating world of this transformative art.

You can experience Japanese dance for just half a day. However, if you want to fully transform yourself by putting on makeup and wigs, it is best to stay for about one to two weeks. We will create a course to suit your schedule, so if you would like to try Japanese dance, please feel free to let us know.
