Inuyama Festival

【Inuyama City】
Date : First Saturday and Sunday of April every year

The Inuyama Festival is a festival of Haritsuna Shrine, which enshrines the local guardian deity, and has been passed down to the present day since it began in 1635 (Kan'ei 12) with the encouragement of Naruse Hayatomasatora, lord of Inuyama Castle and a retainer of the Owari Tokugawa clan. The main attraction of the festival are the 13 floats, each of which is a magnificent three-tiered structure.
Karakuri puppets, handed down since the Edo period, are manipulated on top of the floats, and various performances are offered. The festival is further enhanced by the dynamic pulling of the floats ("Donden" and "Shakuri") by the Teko-ren, three precious parades, and the golden undergarments worn by the children who play the music. At night, candles are lit in the lanterns decorated on the floats, and the procession beneath the cherry blossoms transports the people to a dreamlike world.
