Tsutsuimachi Tenno Festival
【Nagoya city】
Date: First Saturday and Sunday of June every year
The Tsutsui Tenno Festival is a two-day festival in Tsutsui-cho, Higashi Ward, Nagoya, that begins on the evening of the first Friday in June (Yoi Matsuri) and continues over two days, on the Saturday (Main Matsuri) and Sunday (Final Matsuri).
Around the time of the Tenpo era, an epidemic broke out, and the residents of Jomyojimae-cho, near what is now Tsutsui-cho 4-chome, Higashi Ward, Nagoya, received dengaku talismans from Tsushima Shrine, which enshrines Gozu Tenno, and enshrined them at the doorsteps of their homes. This saved them from the plague, and they began to offer prayers at Tsushima Shrine, which is said to have led to the parade of floats in Yutori-guruma-cho.
When Kuwana-cho (present-day Naka Ward, Nagoya) built a new float, the old Yutori-guruma float became the property of Jomyo-ji Temple, and Odagiri Harue's Meiyo Kenbun Zue records that it was being pulled in 1832.
In 1887, Nishitsui-cho purchased the Jinno-guruma float from Shinyashiki, Hiroi-mura (present-day Nakamura Ward, Nagoya), and the following year, in 1888, began pulling it together with the Yutori-guruma float.
As the Showa era began, changes in social conditions made it difficult to pull the floats, and there were periods when the floats were not pulled, including during the war, but from 1975 onwards, both floats began to participate in the Tsutsuimachi Tenno Festival again. The festival dates were originally June 1st and 2nd, but were changed to the current dates in 1987.
