Arimatsu Festival
【Nagoya City】
Date: First Sunday of October every year
Currently, three floats are pulled at the Arimatsu Tenmangu Shrine Autumn Festival, held on the first Sunday of October. Arimatsu was originally developed as a branch village of Okehazama Village (Midori Ward, Nagoya City), and its former patron deity was the Okehazama Shinmei Shrine.
The Arimatsu Tenmangu Shrine Autumn Festival originated from a pilgrimage from Arimatsu to the Okehazama Shinmei Shrine, held in August of the lunar calendar. Records show that lions and horses also traveled from Okehazama to Arimatsu.
Initially, festivals in Arimatsu centered around umbrella poles and horse heads. By the late Edo period, documents and inscriptions on boxes inside the float storehouses indicate that Arimatsu also had some kind of wheeled float.
While umbrella poles and horse heads are no longer paraded around the town today, floats are still paraded from Higashimachi, Nakamachi, and Nishimachi. Also, around 1935, Tengu and Shojo costumes were created in imitation of Narumi's Shojo, and even today they are still worn as they parade around the town. marks the festival's finale, hand-held and large-sized fireworks are launched in a spectacular display at Hananoki Square, lighting up the night sky as the festival reaches its climax.
